5 ASO Strategies That Doubled Our Customers' Installs in 2025

Across 12,000 campaigns, five tactics moved the needle the most: keyword pacing, rating boost timing, review velocity, package-install drips, and category laddering. Here's each one with the numbers.

Across 12,000 ASO campaigns we ran in 2025, five tactics consistently produced the biggest install lifts. None of them are new. All five are about pacing and sequencing, not about pulling a magic lever no one else knows about. Here they are with the numbers each one delivered.

Strategy 1: Pace, don't spike

The single biggest performance gap in our data is between teams that drip-feed campaigns and teams that blast them. Drip campaigns outperform single-day blasts by ~3x on rank holding, measured as the percentage of gained positions still held at Day 30.

The data:

Campaign type Avg rank gain Rank held at Day 30
Single-day blast (1,000 installs day 1) +18 positions 22%
14-day drip (~70/day) +24 positions 71%

The 14-day drip produces a bigger rank gain and holds nearly three times as much of it. The reason is the stricter spike detection shipped in late 2025; the store now smooths your velocity, so a one-day blast just doesn't get the credit it used to.

Apply this by running every keyword campaign over 10+ days minimum. 14 days is the sweet spot for most categories.

Strategy 2: Pair keyword installs with reviews

Keyword installs lift rank. Rank lifts impressions. Impressions only become installs at your conversion rate. If your store page converts at 1.5% when peers are at 5%, you're wasting two-thirds of the rank lift you just bought.

Pairing keyword install campaigns with a review order solves this:

  • Keyword installs alone: 24 positions gained, 4.1% CVR maintained → net new installs = +1,180
  • Keyword installs + review order: 24 positions gained, 5.8% CVR achieved → net new installs = +1,940

Same rank lift, 64% more installs from the same lift, because the impressions actually convert. The combined campaign cost was ~22% more; the install lift was 64% more.

Strategy 3: Time the rating boost before the keyword campaign

If your rating is below 4.3, run a Rating order before the keyword install campaign, not during. The reason is the algorithm's conversion-rate weighting: until your rating crosses ~4.3, your impressions convert at a discount, and the store discounts your relevance score accordingly.

The sequence matters:

  1. Week 1: Rating order, drip 7 days
  2. Week 2: Pause. Let store metrics catch up.
  3. Week 3-5: Keyword install campaign, drip 14 days

Customers who run this sequence see ~38% more total installs than customers who run the rating and keyword campaigns in parallel. The parallel approach wastes the early week's impressions on a still-low-rating page.

Strategy 4: Defend top-3 positions before expanding

Once a keyword is in the top 3 of your category, it's earning ~60% of all installs that keyword drives. Holding that position is worth more than chasing 10 more top-20 positions.

Our customers who defend top-3 positions with a small monthly maintenance order (~100 installs/month) hold those positions 86% of the time at the 6-month mark. Customers who don't defend lose ~70% of their top-3 wins within 90 days as competitors catch up.

The maintenance cost: ~$30/month per top-3 keyword. The value: every install that keyword sends you for the duration.

Strategy 5: Ladder category chart rank with package installs

For apps trying to break into top 100 of their category, the lever is Package Installs over 14+ days. A drip-fed 500/day × 14d order on a mid-traffic category typically lifts apps 30-80 positions from where they started.

The most effective sequence we've seen is:

  1. Days 1-7: 400 installs/day, ramp slowly
  2. Days 8-14: 600 installs/day, sustained push
  3. Days 15-21: 200 installs/day, hold and observe

Apps that ran this 21-day ladder pattern reached top 100 at a 73% rate. Apps that ran a 7-day burst of the same total install count reached top 100 at a 24% rate. Same dollar spend, very different outcomes.

Putting all five together

The customers who doubled their installs in 2025 weren't using a secret tactic. They were applying these five in sequence:

  1. Audit rating, fix it if below 4.3 (Strategy 3)
  2. Run a keyword install drip on 2-3 target terms (Strategy 1)
  3. Pair the keyword drip with a review order (Strategy 2)
  4. Monthly maintenance on any top-3 keyword wins (Strategy 4)
  5. Quarterly package install push to ladder category chart (Strategy 5)

Total monthly spend for an average customer running this pattern: $1,800-2,400. Average install lift at the 90-day mark vs baseline: +112%.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most effective ASO strategy in 2026?

Pacing campaigns over 10-14 days instead of single-day blasts. The store's 2025 algorithm update specifically demotes velocity spikes; drips outperform blasts by ~3x on rank held at Day 30.

How much should I spend on ASO per month?

For most apps running the five-strategy pattern, $1,800-2,400/month covers it: $400-600 for keyword installs, $200-300 for reviews, $300-500 for ratings (only when below 4.3), $30 per top-3 keyword maintenance, and quarterly $1,000-1,500 for category chart pushes.

Should I run a Rating order or a Review order first?

Rating first if you're below 4.3. The rating gates your conversion rate, which gates the value of any other ASO spend. Once you're at 4.3+, reviews become the freshness signal that sustains the conversion.

Can I run all five strategies at once?

You can but you'll waste budget. The sequence matters; running keyword installs while your rating is 3.8 means the impressions you buy don't convert, so the rank lift wastes itself.

How long until I see results?

First rank movement on keyword campaigns at Day 3-5. Stable position at Day 7-10. Category chart movement at Day 7-21. Total install lift vs baseline is measurable at Day 30-45.
